Pivoting teaches rear end awareness, while strengthening gluteal, hamstring and quadricep muscles by raising the height of the front feet and shifting weight to the hind limbs. Sid stepping also strengthens the abductor (outer muscles of the hip) and adductors (inner thigh muscles).
You can begin with a floor level platform if needed and work up to an elevated platform no higher than half of your dog’s elbow height. Be sure to reward each individual step to begin to help prevent rushing. Work up to having your dog stepping in one direction 3 steps (rewarding each individual step to keep movement slow and controlled) then pivoting 3 steps in the opposite direction for 5 repetitions. Build up to 3 sets of 5.
